My career journey to a leadership position at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana represents an unusual blend of business acumen, marketing experience and healthcare management expertise.


I began with a chemistry degree and secured a scholarship from a Slovenian pharmaceutical company. This opportunity opened doors to a marketing role where I covered Central and Eastern Europe, giving me valuable exposure to diverse healthcare markets across the region.


My career progressed rapidly. I transitioned into management and became one of the youngest executive directors at the company. Eventually seeking fresh challenges, I moved into business restructuring at Slovenia’s only private hospital.


This experience provided the perfect foundation for my next role leading the Surgical Clinic’s business operations at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. After six years in this position, I shifted to corporate security leadership—a move that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted the critical importance of crisis management skills.


In the post-pandemic period, my involvement in the European SUNRISE project has reinforced my belief in the paramount importance of preparedness for future healthcare crises.


Staffing Challenges And Their Impact


One of the most pressing issues at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana is staffing, particularly in nursing. Over the past decade, the educational profile of nurses has shifted—while previously, 60% had a secondary education, today, 60% hold higher education degrees.


However, the fundamental nursing needs of patients remain largely unchanged.


Despite this educational shift, salaries and working conditions have not improved significantly, leading to high attrition rates. Many nurses are opting for better-paying jobs outside the healthcare sector, particularly in retail, or across the border in neighboring Austria.
